Course Description

Develop a deeper understanding of colour and learn how to mix and use it with greater confidence in this practical 10-week colour mixing course.

Designed for painters of all levels, the course explores how colours interact and how colour theory can be applied in practice. Rather than simply learning a set of rules, you’ll discover why particular colour combinations work, why others become dull or muddy, and how to make more deliberate colour choices in your own painting.

Through artist-led demonstrations, practical colour-mixing exercises and painting studies, you’ll explore the colour wheel, primary, secondary and tertiary colours, warm and cool colours, values and tones, and the effect of light on colour.

You’ll also investigate limited palettes, colour harmony and double contrast, developing practical techniques for creating clearer, more vibrant mixes and understanding the relationships between colours.

Understanding and Mixing Colour

A key part of the course is learning how to analyse colour rather than relying on guesswork. You’ll learn to consider hue, value and temperature, identify what needs adjusting and make changes with greater intention.

Working with both acrylic and oil paints, you’ll apply these principles across different painting media and explore how colour behaves in practice. You’ll also learn how to preserve successful colour mixes, building a personal collection of colour charts, experiments and painting studies that can provide a useful reference for your future work.

Each session combines demonstrations, practical exercises and painting studies with guidance and feedback. The exercises are designed for experimentation and learning, not perfect finished paintings. The emphasis is on experimentation, observation and developing a practical understanding of colour that you can take directly into your own painting practice.
