Summer Light Painting
£140.00
Course Description
This four-week studio painting course explores the many ways artists capture summer light through colour, atmosphere, and expressive brushwork. Working in both watercolour and acrylic, students will study the techniques and visual language of four iconic painters whose work celebrates sunlight, warmth, movement, and vivid seasonal colour.
Each session focuses on one artist and their distinctive approach to painting light and atmosphere, encouraging students to create personal interpretations inspired by the work rather than direct copies.
Week 1 explores Gauguin’s tropical scenes through bold colour, warmth, and simplified composition. Week 2 focuses on Van Gogh’s summer evenings and expressive brushwork, exploring movement, texture, and dynamic skies. Week 3 draws inspiration from Sargent’s Mediterranean courtyards, examining sunlight, architecture, and atmospheric shadow. The final week looks at Sorolla’s luminous coastal paintings, focusing on reflections, movement, and the effects of intense summer light.
Through demonstrations, guided studio exercises, and individual support, students will experiment with layering, glazing, expressive mark-making, colour mixing, and compositional techniques while developing confidence in both watercolour and acrylic painting.
Suitable for adults of mixed experience levels.
