• This 10-week Art Media & Techniques course provides a structured introduction to the essential drawing and painting media used by artists.

• Designed for beginners and intermediate learners, this course explores graphite, charcoal, coloured pencil, ink, watercolour, acrylic, oil and gouache through demonstrations, practical studio exercises and individual tutor guidance, building confidence while developing your own creative style.

• Classes take place at our North London studio, close to Crouch End, Finsbury Park, Archway and Highgate.

Course Description

Explore the unique qualities of traditional drawing and painting media in this structured 10-week course designed for beginners and intermediate learners. Working with graphite, charcoal, coloured pencil, ink, watercolour, acrylic, oil and gouache, you’ll develop technical skills, creative confidence and an understanding of how different materials can be used individually and together. Through demonstrations, practical studio exercises and individual tutor guidance, you’ll gradually build your own artistic approach while creating a final mixed-media artwork.

By the end of the course, you will:

Programme

Weeks 1–4: Drawing Media

• Graphite – tone and observation
• Charcoal – expressive drawing
• Coloured Pencil – layering and colour
• Ink – pen, brush and washes

Week 5: Mixed Drawing Media
Combine graphite, charcoal, ink, coloured pencil and white chalk to create a finished drawing.

Weeks 6–9: Painting Media

• Watercolour – washes and transparency
• Acrylic – layering and texture
• Oil Painting – blending and colour
• Gouache – opaque painting

Week 10: Mixed Painting Media
Create a final mixed-media artwork combining the drawing and painting techniques explored throughout the course, followed by group critique and reflection.
