Course Description

Develop confidence and versatility in watercolour painting through this structured 10-week course, suitable for beginners through to advanced-level artists.

The course progresses from fundamental watercolour techniques to more advanced and experimental approaches. You’ll learn how to control water and pigment through wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry painting, gradients, layering and different types of edges, before developing your understanding of colour mixing, tonal structure, light and shadow.

As the course progresses, you’ll explore colour relationships, warm and cool colours, aerial perspective and techniques for creating convincing three-dimensional form. You’ll also learn how to represent different materials and textures, including glass, metal and fabric, through careful use of colour, transparency, edges and brushwork.

Working across subjects including still life, flowers, landscapes, architecture, urban scenes and the human figure, you’ll discover how different watercolour techniques can be adapted to create depth, atmosphere, texture and expressive effects.

The course also explores loose watercolour and contemporary and experimental approaches to the medium, giving you opportunities to work more freely and discover how water can create atmospheric and unexpected results.

Each three-hour class combines tutor demonstrations, visual presentations, practical painting exercises and group critique. You’ll have time to observe techniques before applying them to your own work, with guidance and feedback throughout.

The programme builds progressively towards a final self-directed painting, where you’ll bring together the techniques and ideas explored during the course and make your own decisions about subject, colour, composition, technique and finish.
