Course Overview

• A structured 10-week comic art course for teens aged 14–18, developing the drawing and visual storytelling skills needed to create original comics.
• Learn character design, comic drawing, camera angles, light and shadow, panel composition, speech bubbles, sound effects and visual storytelling through practical exercises and tutor guidance.
• Develop an original comic from initial ideas and thumbnails through story development, drawing, inking, colouring and final layout.
• Suitable for teenagers who are complete beginners or already have some drawing experience and want to develop their comic art and storytelling skills.
• Classes take place in our North London studio, close to Crouch End, Finsbury Park, Archway and Highgate.

Course Description

This structured 10-week Comic Strip Art course for teens aged 14–18 develops the drawing, design and visual storytelling skills needed to turn ideas into original comics.

Beginning with character design, students explore different ways to create distinctive characters before learning how cinematic techniques such as camera angles, framing, light and shadow can make drawings more dynamic and expressive.

The course then introduces the visual language of comics, including panels, speech bubbles, sound effects, composition and pacing. Students learn how images work together in sequence to communicate action, atmosphere and narrative clearly.

As the course progresses, students explore visual storytelling and silent narrative, learning how to communicate a story through images alone. They develop ideas into scenarios, create thumbnails and plan how a story will unfold across a sequence of panels.

During the later stages of the course, students develop their initial sketches through line work and inking, considering outlines, light and shadow before introducing colour and creating the final layout.

Each class combines tutor presentations, practical exercises and group critiques, giving students opportunities to review their work, experiment with different approaches and progressively develop their ideas.

By the end of the 10 weeks, students will have experienced the complete comic-making process — from character and story development through drawing, sequencing, inking and colouring — and brought these skills together in a finished comic strip project.
