-
This practical 10-week Classical Drawing course develops confidence and observational drawing skills through classical drawing principles and is suitable for all levels.
-
Through weekly studio classes, you’ll break down the fundamentals of drawing, including proportion, perspective, foreshortening, form, space and mark-making, into clear, manageable steps.
-
You’ll learn new drawing skills and problem-solving techniques, giving you a practical toolkit to understand what to practise, recognise when something isn’t working and know how to move forward.
-
Classes take place at our North London studio, a short distance from Crouch End, Finsbury Park, Archway and Highgate.

Course Description
Develop stronger observational drawing skills and a clearer understanding of how drawings are constructed in this practical 10-week Classical Drawing course.
Rooted in classical drawing principles, the course focuses on learning how to see, measure and translate three-dimensional forms onto a two-dimensional surface. Through artist-led demonstrations, practical exercises and drawing studies, you’ll build techniques that can be applied confidently to your own drawing practice.
You’ll develop a more precise eye for proportion and relationships, using practical methods to measure and check what you see. Fundamental drawing concepts, including perspective and foreshortening, are broken down into clear, manageable steps, helping you understand how to create convincing form, space, and depth.
Throughout the course, you’ll explore practical approaches to common drawing challenges. You’ll learn how horizontal and vertical lines can establish relationships, how an analogue clock face can help you judge diagonal angles, and how complex forms can be broken down into simpler, more manageable information.
You’ll also explore shadow shapes, edges, line weight and mark-making, learning how these elements can describe three-dimensional form and communicate what you see more effectively.
Develop Practical Drawing and Problem-Solving Skills
An important part of the course is learning what to do when a drawing isn’t working. Rather than simply continuing to work over it or starting again, you’ll learn how to identify the problem and choose an appropriate technique to move forward.
The aim is to build a practical toolkit of classical and observational drawing techniques while developing the confidence to understand what to practise, what to look for and what to try next.
Each session combines demonstrations, exercises and drawing studies with guidance and feedback. The emphasis is on experimentation, observation and learning through drawing rather than producing a perfect finished piece.
What You’ll Learn
- Develop a more precise and confident approach to observational drawing
- Understand and check proportion, angles and relationships
- Break down perspective and foreshortening into practical steps
- Translate three-dimensional forms onto a two-dimensional surface
- Use shadow shapes and edges to create form, space and depth
- Use line weight and mark-making more intentionally
- Identify and solve common problems within a drawing
- Build a practical toolkit of drawing techniques for independent practice
Who Is This Course For?
This course is suitable for beginners, returners and more experienced artists who want to strengthen their observational drawing skills and gain a clearer understanding of how drawings are constructed.
It is particularly suited to anyone who can see what they want to draw but finds translating it onto the page difficult, as well as artists who want practical strategies for overcoming common drawing challenges and developing greater accuracy and confidence.
Materials
All necessary drawing materials are provided, so you can focus on developing your skills and experimenting with different approaches without needing to purchase specialist materials before the course begins.
End-of-Year Exhibition
At the end of the year, a group exhibition will showcase work created throughout the course, allowing students to celebrate their progress, share their work and gain confidence in presenting their art.
