Class Description

Step into the world of classical art with this focused, skills-based course for both painters and drawers. Designed for students who want to develop technical precision to aid their creative expression, this course emphasises careful observation, proportion, tone, and structure — the core skills that underpin all great art.
Working with references after Charles Bargue and other classical study materials, students will undertake a sustained piece that continues from session to session, allowing for deep engagement and mastery of detail. You’ll learn to:

  • Observe and replicate forms with accuracy
  • Understand the relationships of line, shape, and proportion
  • Build tone and volume through careful shading and rendering
  • Develop precision in composition and structure
  • Apply traditional methods that strengthen both drawing and painting skills

Each session combines guided exercises and individual feedback, giving you the tools to tackle complex subjects with confidence. This course particularly encourages patience, focus, and attention to detail, skills that will enhance all your artistic work.

All basic materials are provided – just bring yourself, a steady mindset, and a
commitment to disciplined practice.

Optional extras:

  • Mechanical pencils in size 2mm, with lead in 2B, HB and 2H (there are sets on Amazon like this)
  • Nitram Charcoal in soft (green), medium (red) and hard (blue), sharpening block
  • Your own brushes, filbert top with long handles

These are completely optional and not required for the class.

By the end of this Classical Studies in Drawing and Painting course, you’ll have honed your classical technique and strengthened your ability to create more expressive,
confident artwork in any medium.
