Course Description

Introduction to Portraiture is a structured 10-week course focused on developing the skills needed to capture accurate likeness in portrait drawing and painting. Students begin by studying the fundamental structure and proportions of the face, learning how to observe key relationships between features and avoid common portrait mistakes. Emphasis is placed on understanding tone, expression and subtle variations that contribute to a convincing portrait.

During the first part of the course, participants work primarily with pencil and charcoal, building confidence in drawing techniques that support accurate observation and strong tonal development. These core skills provide a solid foundation for progressing to more complex portrait work.

As the course develops, students move on to guided portrait projects and have the opportunity to work with paint. Acrylic paints are provided, and those with experience may choose to work in oils. Practical exercises support individual progress while encouraging personal interpretation and creative development.

The course concludes with the opportunity to work from a live model, allowing students to apply their skills in a traditional studio setting. Suitable for beginners as well as more experienced students wishing to strengthen their portrait skills, the course offers a supportive environment for developing confidence in portrait drawing and painting. Most materials are provided.

Complimentary refreshments are provided, including coffee, a range of teas, and biscuits.
