Course Description
Across 10 weeks, you’ll be guided through a variety of binding styles and creative
processes, including:
● Week 1: Chain Stitch & Pocket Book
● Week 2: Japanese Stab Binding
● Week 3: Concertina Binding
● Week 4-5: French Binding
● Weeks 6-7: Coptic Binding
● Weeks 8-10: Artist Book Project – developing your own artist book using the techniques learned
Alongside binding methods, you’ll also be introduced to printmaking techniques such as embossing, calligraphy, and typography, while exploring contemporary book arts and the possibilities of books as 3D objects.
What You’ll Learn
● A range of traditional and contemporary bookbinding methods
● How to confidently work with bookbinding materials, tools, and papers
● The fundamentals of cover-making, stitching, recognising paper grain, folding, and structures
● Ways to combine text, image, and texture creatively
