Course Description

Welcome!

This course is designed to sharpen your observation and drawing skills using classical techniques. Whether you’re a beginner or returning to drawing after a break, this course will help you build confidence, develop control, and bring more clarity and intention to your work.

Each week includes a mix of demonstrations, practical exercises, and time to ask questions and reflect.

Week-by-Week Overview

Week 1 – Getting to Know Your Materials
Explore pencils, charcoal, and paper types. Get comfortable with essential tools like sharpeners, erasers, and sandpaper. Practice mark making, tone control, and different shading approaches to develop range and control.

Week 2 – Drawing Approaches & Structure
Learn measuring techniques (like sight-size), explore expressive drawing styles (continuous line, wrapping), and strengthen your sense of structure with shape blocking, plum lines, and angle breaks. Discover how to use vertical, horizontal, and diagonal guides to improve accuracy.

Week 3 – Composition & Light
Understand how to place your subject effectively and explore how composition creates visual impact. Learn to interpret and simplify light sources, work with core shadows and transitions, and use line weight to guide the viewer’s eye.

Week 4 – Integration & Practice
This week brings everything together. You’ll have time to revisit key topics, ask questions, and work more independently. It’s your chance to build confidence and embed what you’ve learned.

Tips for a Great Experience

  • Arrive a few minutes early to settle in.
  • Wear comfortable clothing – drawing can get a little messy!
  • Ask questions – there are no silly ones.
  • Take breaks when needed.
  • Bring photos or reference material if there is something specific you would like to draw/ copy
  • Trust the process: progress often shows up gradually.

We’re excited to see what you create!
